Scaling & Root Planing
Scaling and root planing is a two-part process that is often recommended when gum disease has progressed, causing gum pockets to form. The first step is to remove hardened plaque around your teeth and below your gums (scaling) before moving on to the second step, which is root planing. This process involves smoothing the tooth root so that the surrounding tissue properly reattaches and makes it difficult for bacteria to adhere in the future.
Antibiotic Therapy
In combination with scaling and root planing, we may also recommend antibiotic therapy. Using Arestin, this topical medication is applied to the gum pockets where it spreads over several weeks, effectively targeting and eliminating any remaining bacteria while also encouraging swift healing.
