What can dental veneers help with?

Dental veneers are thin, customized porcelain coverings placed on front-facing teeth to improve aesthetics. Once exclusive to celebrities, porcelain veneers are now available to everyone. Dental veneers are popular because they can correct several dental issues.

Some include:

  • Discoloration: Veneers can cover stains that don’t respond to teeth whitening.
  • Chips/cracks: They repair chips, cracks, and worn-down teeth to their original form and function.
  • Gaps: Veneers can close unwanted gaps between teeth for a uniform, aesthetically appealing smile.
  • Poorly shaped/sized teeth: Dental veneers can enhance the shape and size of teeth, making them appear wider, longer, or more symmetrical.
  • Slightly misaligned teeth: Dental veneers can effectively correct mildly crooked teeth. Often referred to as “instant orthodontics,” they provide a solution for misaligned teeth without needing months or years of treatment.

Dental veneers can be applied to one or several teeth to achieve consistently brilliant results. The results are always realistic and don’t leave embarrassing evidence of dental work.

Dental veneer process: What can I expect?

Placing porcelain veneers requires multiple appointments. The process starts with a consultation to discuss your goals.  At the preparation visit, about 0.5 mm of enamel is removed from the teeth in preparation for dental veneers. This reduction creates enough space for the thickness of the veneers. To ensure a comfortable experience, local anesthesia is typically administered to numb the area.

We will take digital impressions of your teeth and send them to our partner lab to create your custom veneers. Until your permanent veneers are ready, your prepared teeth will be protected with provisional veneers.

Once your veneers are ready, they will be sent to our office. During your appointment, the temporary veneers will be removed, and the new veneers will be tried on. Adjustments will be made as necessary to ensure a comfortable and natural fit. Your brand-new smile will look stunning and boost your confidence wherever you go.

Are dental veneers worth it?

Dental veneers are second to none. They offer numerous benefits that other treatments can’t match.

Some include:

  • Natural aesthetics: Porcelain veneers are incredibly lifelike, allowing you to enjoy your beautiful smile without insecurity.
  • Durability: Porcelain veneers are resilient enough to withstand everyday use. With good care, your veneers can last 15 years or more.
  • Stain resistance: Unlike natural enamel, porcelain veneers are non-porous. Why does this matter? Impermeability means porcelain veneers can’t pick up stains from coffee, red wine, and other staining foods. This allows you to enjoy a brilliantly white smile year after year.
  • Versatility: Dental veneers can resolve several dental imperfections with a simple treatment.
  • Quick treatment: Transforming your smile with porcelain veneers takes only a few easy visits.

Veneers FAQs

1. What are porcelain veneers? How are they different from composite veneers?

Porcelain veneers are thin, custom-crafted shells bonded to the front of teeth to improve appearance. Compared to composite veneers, porcelain is more stain-resistant, stronger, and longer-lasting. Porcelain also reflects light more naturally, which helps create a lifelike smile result that many patients prefer.

2. How long do porcelain veneers usually last with proper care?

Porcelain veneers often last 10–15 years or longer when well-maintained. Their longevity depends on daily oral hygiene, avoiding habits like nail-biting, and attending routine dental visits. Regular checkups allow your dentist to monitor the veneer condition and address minor concerns before they escalate.

3. What factors influence the cost of porcelain veneers?

Veneer pricing varies based on how many teeth are treated, the complexity of smile design, and the materials used. Customization and dentist expertise also play a role. Many patients explore financing options to make treatment manageable, especially when veneers are part of a broader cosmetic plan.

4. Are there risks or side effects associated with porcelain veneers?

Some patients experience temporary tooth sensitivity after placement, which usually fades. Veneers may chip if exposed to excessive force, though this is uncommon with proper care. Choosing an experienced cosmetic dentist and following aftercare guidelines helps minimize risks and ensures long-term success.

5. How do I care for porcelain veneers day to day?

Veneers are cared for much like natural teeth. Brushing twice daily, flossing regularly, and using a non-abrasive toothpaste are recommended. It’s best to avoid chewing ice or hard objects. Routine dental visits help keep both veneers and underlying teeth healthy.

6. Can porcelain veneers be replaced if they become damaged or worn?

Yes. Porcelain veneers can be replaced if they chip, wear down, or no longer meet your cosmetic goals. Replacement involves removing the old veneer and bonding a new one. Your dentist will evaluate the tooth structure to ensure it remains suitable for continued veneer treatment.

7. Who tends to be a good candidate for porcelain veneers?

Ideal candidates generally have healthy teeth and gums and want to improve color, shape, or symmetry. Veneers may not be recommended for patients with untreated decay or severe grinding habits. A consultation helps determine whether veneers align with your oral health and expectations.

8. Do porcelain veneers look natural in different lighting conditions?

Yes. Porcelain closely mimics natural enamel by reflecting and absorbing light similarly to real teeth. This allows veneers to appear natural in bright sunlight, indoor lighting, and photographs. Careful shade selection further ensures veneers blend seamlessly with surrounding teeth.

9. Are porcelain veneers available at both Blue Back Dental locations?

Patients can explore porcelain veneer consultations at Blue Back Dental in both West Hartford and Avon. Access to two offices makes it easier to receive evaluations, follow-ups, and ongoing care while maintaining consistent cosmetic dentistry standards across locations.

10. How do porcelain veneers compare to whitening or orthodontic treatment?

Veneers offer immediate cosmetic improvement, while whitening and orthodontics address specific concerns over time. Veneers can correct multiple issues at once, including shape and spacing. Your dentist can help compare options to determine which approach best fits your smile goals.
