An attractive smile consists of both healthy teeth and gums. Yet many people put little effort into keeping their gums healthy and strong. Poor brushing and flossing habits can put you at risk of gum disease, an infection of your gum tissues that causes them to swell, bleed, and recede. Seeing a dentist for gum problems can help manage these symptoms and restore your gum health. The doctors at Blue Back Dental serving Avon and West Hartford, Connecticut, are on call to help you resolve gum problems that threaten your oral health.      Â
Here are five ways your Avon or West Hartford, Connecticut dentist can help improve your gum health:
If you’re showing signs of extensive plaque and tartar buildup on your teeth during routine checkups, we’ll review your brushing and flossing techniques to see how you can improve. Poor oral care is a common cause of gum disease. Improving your oral hygiene routine can reverse early gum disease symptoms to restore your gum health.
Professional dental cleanings can help prevent gum problems by eliminating the source of bacterial gum infections, which are plaque and tartar buildup on your teeth. Dental cleanings keep bacteria from breeding under the gumline of your teeth and infecting your gum tissues. Seeing our dental team twice a year for professional cleanings can help preserve your gum health.

If you show signs of advanced gum disease, our doctors may recommend scaling and root planing treatment. This is a deep cleaning of your teeth and gum tissues under the gumline to control the bacterial infection and keep it from spreading. We’ll scale your teeth to remove plaque and tartar buildup and smooth out the root surfaces to prevent future buildup. Deep cleaning helps contain the infection to give damaged gum tissues a chance to heal.
In addition to scaling and root planing treatment, we may prescribe antibiotics to combat bacteria causing gum disease. You can take these antibiotics orally, or we can apply a topical antibiotic cream to your gums to get the infection under control.
Severe cases of periodontal disease may require surgical intervention to restore your gum health. In its advanced stage, periodontal disease can cause extensive damage to your gums and teeth, leading to premature tooth loss. Procedures like flap surgery, gum grafting, or pocket reduction surgery can be extremely helpful in treating severe periodontal infections to help save your teeth and preserve your smile.
The good news is that there are ways to effectively treat gum problems, especially in their early stages. Routine visits to your Avon or West Hartford, Connecticut dentist enable our team to detect problems early and intervene quickly to restore your gum health.
