A dental crown is designed to protect and preserve a tooth that has been weakened by damage or decay. But just like natural teeth, crowns can crack, break, or wear down over time. At Blue Back Dental in Avon, Connecticut, the Drs. provide advanced dental care with a focus on comfort, function, and long-lasting results. If you have a cracked or damaged crown, it might be tempting to ignore it, especially if it is not causing immediate discomfort. However, delaying treatment can lead to more serious dental issues and higher costs down the line.
Here are five important reasons to have that cracked crown repaired or replaced sooner rather than later:
When a crown cracks, it can expose the underlying tooth structure to bacteria, pressure, and temperature changes. This can lead to increased sensitivity, further decay, or even a fracture of the natural tooth. What started as a small crack in your crown could eventually compromise the health of the entire tooth. By having the crown addressed early by our team, you reduce the risk of needing more invasive and costly procedures later.
A damaged crown may not fit your tooth as snugly as it once did. This improper fit can trap food particles and bacteria, irritate the surrounding gums, and increase the likelihood of infection. Inflamed gums can become tender, bleed easily, and in severe cases, develop into periodontal disease. Repairing or replacing the crown promptly helps maintain both your tooth and gum health.
Even if a cracked crown starts off feeling painless, that can quickly change. As the damage worsens, it may expose the dentin or nerve of the tooth beneath it, leading to pain when chewing, biting, or drinking hot or cold beverages. What once was a manageable situation can suddenly become an emergency. We can restore comfort and function with a new, properly fitted crown.
A crown that is cracked or no longer fits correctly can affect the way your teeth come together when you bite. This imbalance can place stress on your jaw joint and muscles, potentially resulting in temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain or headaches. It may also cause uneven wear on surrounding teeth. A properly restored crown ensures your bite stays balanced and healthy.
Postponing crown repair might feel like you are saving time and money, but the opposite is usually true. Leaving a cracked crown untreated often results in more complex dental problems, which can mean root canals, extractions, or the need for more extensive restorations like dental implants. Acting early to repair or replace the crown is a cost-effective decision that protects your long-term oral health.
