Porcelain veneers are a transformative cosmetic solution that can dramatically enhance your smile. Whether you are correcting chips, gaps, or discoloration, veneers provide a natural, long-lasting result. At Blue Back Dental, in Avon, Connecticut, we offer expertly crafted veneers that are custom-designed to suit each patient’s unique smile goals. While veneers are known for their durability, their longevity largely depends on how well you care for them.
If you want your veneers to look and function beautifully for years to come, these five daily habits can make all the difference:
Just because veneers do not decay does not mean you can cut back on brushing and flossing. Good oral hygiene is essential to protect the natural teeth underneath the veneers as well as your gum health. Brush twice a day, with a soft-bristle toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste to avoid scratching the surface. Floss gently once a day and consider using an alcohol-free mouthwash to keep bacteria at bay without damaging the adhesive.
Bruxism, or chronic teeth grinding, puts tremendous pressure on your veneers and natural teeth. Over time, this habit can cause veneers to chip or loosen. If you suspect you grind your teeth, especially while sleeping, we can custom-fit a nightguard to protect your smile. Wearing a nightguard regularly is one of the simplest and most effective ways to prolong the life of your cosmetic dental work.
It is easy to forget how fragile veneers can be when you are tempted to open a package or bite through stubborn plastic with your teeth. These shortcuts can crack or dislodge a veneer. Always use the appropriate tools for opening containers or cutting materials. Veneers are designed to handle normal biting and chewing—not tasks better suited for scissors or bottle openers.
While veneers are highly resistant to staining, the bonded cement material that secures them is not. Regular exposure to dark-colored beverages like coffee, red wine, and cola can cause the edges of your veneers to become discolored. Smoking can also stain the cement and compromise your gum health. Limiting these habits or rinsing your mouth with water afterward can go a long way in keeping your veneers bright and beautiful.
Routine checkups and cleanings are key to maintaining not only your veneers but also your overall oral health. During your visits to Blue Back Dental, we will examine the condition of your veneers, monitor your bite, and catch any potential issues early on. Professional cleanings also help remove plaque and prevent gum disease, which could affect the stability of your veneers over time.
